How Dedicated? This was the title put forth by Mr Godwin Benjamin to the congregation of Swansea Church. How dedicated are we to the job God has called us to do? How dedicated are we as a church to serving others?
Mr Godwin Benjamin is the ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) Annual Appeal Coordinator. ADRA is an independent humanitarian agency established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church for the specific purpose of individual and community development and disaster relief.
The message focused on the harsh reality that poverty is still with us even if we do not see it ourselves. 21,000 children under the age of 5 die every day because of poverty, but we often tend to overlook such facts merely because it happens every day and is not ‘newsworthy’. And the reason why this number is so high? Because of a lack of food and clean drinking water. Part of the work ADRA does is to provide relief to countries which are affected with such hardships to provide a service that will help reduce the number of fatalities due to lack of cleaning water by building water pumps in these communities. Giving all access to clean running water which many of us take for granted.
We need to remember to love others. We shouldn’t pick and choose who we should help, but remember that we are all children of God and He loves us so. However the truth is, in order for this to happen, it will require us to step out of our comfort zone to reach those in need of our help; which could be right on our door steps.
As a church we must be practical in our approach to serving others. What may work for one person doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for someone else. We must be able to adapt to suit the needs of the people. By first showing that we care, we also demonstrate how much God cares as well.
